Abstract
This study aims to develop a model for increasing the social
participation of the elderly in environmental management to improve the social
functioning of the elderly. The formulation of the research problem is the
condition of the elderly's social participation in environmental management,
the need for the elderly to increase their participation in environmental
management, and the design of a model for increasing the social participation
of the elderly in environmental management to improve their social
functioning. The research method used is participatory action research with
descriptive qualitative data analysis. Informants are the Elderly Village Group
of Cibiru Wetan Village with purposive sampling. Data collection techniques
were carried out by in-depth interviews, observation, documentation studies,
and focus group discussions. This research can provide views for the community
and stakeholders regarding increasing the social participation of the elderly
and its benefits for the community and for the elderly themselves so that it can
be a stimulus for developing programs to empower the elderly in various
regions. The social functioning of the elderly includes the ability of the elderly
to socialize and give positive responses to others, and to be able to carry out
social roles according to their status. Elderly who are able to utilize social
resources well and have adequate social activities have wider and stronger
social networks. This social network can provide the social support needed by
the elderly in carrying out their social roles properly. Environmental
management activities (ecovillage) are a means of involving the elderly and
providing social support. The elderly can have friends to chat with, increase
their economic value, and increase their self-esteem to contribute to improving
the environment where they live. The results of the study include the condition
of the elderly's social participation in environmental management, the need for
the elderly to increase their social participation, the need to increase the social
functioning of the elderly, and the development of a model for increasing the
social participation of the elderly in the Elderly Village Group of Cibiru Wetan
Village in carrying out environmental management that supports increasing
the social functioning of the elderly based on the conditions and the needs of the
elderly themselves.
